When I lived in Colorado I tried to take advantage of free admission days at the State Parks, local zoos or other attractions. Various state parks here in Kansas are offering free admission days this year, mostly between late March to July.

Plan an adventure with the family to one of these parks. I know I will.

Read the list at the State Park's website

For anyone who has not been to Scott Lake, it is a must see!

Extraordinary scenery for a park out in the midst of the Plains, and very good fishing year-round.

I know on the free day(s) it can be pretty busy, but still worth the trip. Fees, for any other time, are reasonable.

Any other recommendations for state park's to check out?  As a relative newcomer to Kansas, I have not been to any of them yet!

@dsato - Though technically not a state park, Monument Rocks is a cool place. Some of the locals call them the 'Chalk Pyramids' as they are mostly limestone formations. North on 83 a few miles past the Scott Lake park turnoff.

See a couple of my photos in the Gallery.

Even though I've been in GC over a year I still have to make it to Scott Lake. My brother in law, nephew, and I were going to take their camper for a weekend but those plans never came together. Gotta do it this year.

So true, Karl... it's one of my favorite spots to visit for photography, strolling around and simply taking in some unique, interesting sights.

Daniel, you owe it to yourself to make the short trip whenever the weather is conducive.  I've had good luck with weather conditions in mid-March in the past.  Here's a bit more information about those unusual formations that Karl photographed so well last year:

Or:

I know you'll have a good time exploring the surprising formations.  Don't forget to budget a little time to check-out Scott State Park, either before or after the Monument Rock experience.
