USD 457 joins Schools for Fair Funding

This past Monday, thed USD 457 Board of Education voted to join Schools for Fair Funding, a group which may decide to sue the state legislature because they are not adequately funding public education.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Not much response on this one, Dsato, so here's my feeble two-cent's worth.  In my opinion, the school's receive enough funding.  Much of that money is spent on nonessential services (day care, after school activities, way too many para's, etc, etc, etc).  If the schools would focus on the three R's, we could get back to the basics of quality education.  Fair funding is an empty concept, especially when so many of our tax dollars are spent and wasted in the name of "education".  And don't even get me started on the salaries of school "Administrators" and their minions... what a sorry waste of taxpayer dollars.

Taxpayer revolt, anyone?     

I would much rather see our tax dollars go to the care of our elderly citizens.  Heaven knows, they've spent their lives contributing to the tax system, only to find that quality living-assistance is out of reach because we're pouring all available funds into "education".  Sad, indeed.

Having just moved here, I am decidedly uneducated about the state of public education in Garden City specifically and Kansas in general.  In regards to Lou's comments, I would be interested in learning just how education funding is being spent currently, and how it would be potentially spent if funding was increased.

I will be sitting down with USD 457 Board of Education president Mike Utz and board member Gloria Hopkins tomorrow (Wednesday) at 3:30 at Patrick Dugan's for the weekly Talk of the Town podcast if anyone has any questions they would like to see asked.

All fine and well, Daniel.  But bear in mind that I'm not anti-education, but rather pro-elder care.  I may have sounded like I was "lashing out", but not so.  Instead, let's blame it on the "heat of the moment" syndrome (so often used in court!).  Yeah, I was "hot under the collar" from thinking we'd all be saddled with more taxation (without real representation!).

Heh, heh, heh.     

I support quality education for all (as much as the next guy), but the State (or Federal Gov.) can only support so much before... well, you saw the stories on the National Guard closings, right? 

A "house of cards" can only withstand so much breeze.  'Nuff said.
